The art of caring for wood: How to preserve your kitchen utensils for many years
Ahad AliShare
Wooden utensils bring natural beauty, warmth and durability to your kitchen — but like all natural materials, wood needs proper care to stay strong and beautiful over time. At SkandiNest, we design our wooden bowls, cutting boards and cutlery to last a long time — with the right care. Here's your simple guide to caring for them.
🧼 Step-by-step: How to clean wooden utensils and cutting boards
-
Wash by hand
Always wash your wooden products with mild detergent and lukewarm (not hot) water. Use a soft sponge or cloth. -
Avoid soaking
Never let wood stand in water – it can cause cracks, warping and mold. -
Dry immediately
Dry with a towel and allow to air dry completely before storing. Avoid placing near heat or in the dishwasher. -
Natural disinfection (optional)
Rub the surface with a halved lemon and sprinkle with a little salt. Leave for a few minutes, then rinse and dry.
🌿 Nourish the wood: Oil regularly
Wood needs to be rehydrated to maintain its shine and prevent cracking.
How to oil:
-
Apply a small amount of natural oil (linseed oil, paraffin oil or coconut oil).
-
Rub along the grain of the wood.
-
Let stand for a few hours or overnight.
-
Wipe off excess oil before use.
Recommended oils:
-
Linseed oil – deep hydration
-
Food-grade paraffin oil – easy to maintain
-
Coconut oil – naturally antibacterial
Routine:
Oil every 3–4 weeks or when the wood feels dry or dull.
⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid
-
❌ Do not put wood in the dishwasher
-
❌ Do not leave it in water
-
❌ Do not use strong cleaning agents
-
❌ Don't skip the oiling
